HENLEY MASTERCLASS – “RETURN OF THE VIKINGS – NORDIC LEADERSHIP IN TIMES OF EXTREME CHANGE”
The Nordic countries are trending internationally and taking the lead in many different categories. What is it that makes them so successful?
Culturally, politically and philosophically the Nordic countries have been at the forefront of much that is new and interesting in the Western world. Today, they also draw attention to their leadership approach and business practices. Year after year, the Nordic countries rank first when it comes to being the happiest people on earth. Dozens of books are written about Danish ‘hygge’ and Swedish ‘ka’. Is this just a trend or is there something more going on?
Chris Shern, Managing Director of Henley Business School in Denmark, is an American based in the Nordics who has worked for more than two decades in truly Nordic organisations. This outsider-on-the-inside perspective has given him a unique opportunity to reect upon the qualities of Nordic leadership. Chris has interviewed a diverse range of leaders with a very different perspective on Nordic leadership to support and complement his own experiences and conclusions. He has summarised his findings in the book ‘Return of the Vikings’, which was released during spring 2018.
In this MasterClass, we’ll explore the roots and characteristics of Nordic leadership, what is meant by extreme change and why the Nordic leadership approach is better equipped than others to meet the challenges of a chaotic future. Mika Anttonen, Chairman of the Board at St1, who was one of the many interviewed for Chris’ book will join us and provide a real-life example of Nordic leadership.
2) NORDIC LEADERSHIP IN TIMES OF EXTREME CHANGE AND UNCERTAINTY – NORDIC LEADERSHIP IS A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE
Culturally, politically and philosophically the Nordic countries have been at the forefront of much that is new and interesting in the Western world. A trendsetter in design, gastronomy, literature and visual art, the Nordics also draw attention today for their business practices and involvement in key international organizations. At an individual and corporate level, the Nordics are gaining recognition for their distinct approach to leadership
The Nordic peoples have a rich heritage as explorers, navigators and innovators. This provides deep roots, traced back to the Viking era and the nine noble virtues of Nordic mythology. And it still informs the way the Nordic peoples live and work today. The methods, values and leadership practices of the Vikings are woven into the DNA of international businesses founded in the Nordics
“The inclusive, trusting, collaborative style of Nordic leadership offers an alternative way to negotiate through our current times of extreme change. What many of us are now experiencing online in distributed, fluid, networked communities, the Nordics have been practicing on land and sea for centuries. The Nordics are not waiting around to find out when the future begins. They are already leading the way” (passage from “Return of the Vikings – Nordic Leadership in Times of Extreme Change”
